The Australia-Greece Solidarity Campaign has been active since early 2014 in supporting the struggle of Greek people against austerity. We have established committees to work with trade unions, community organisations and political parties. A key area of our work has been with Greek communities.
We extend our invitation to all people who want to be active in the Greek community to join its committee – Filoi tou Syriza (Friends of Syriza). This committee has been established to develop awareness of the struggle against austerity in Greece and to generate support for the deep and radical change the Greek government is attempting to bring about in Greece. In addition, Filoi tou Syriza seeks to organise meetings within the Greek community to gather opinions on the key issues and problems confronting Greek Australians in their interactions with Greece and the Greek government. Filoi tou Syriza will engage cooperatively with other Greek-Australian organisations (including peak bodies) to (i) generate support for the anti-austerity agenda of Syriza and the current Greek government, and (ii) strengthen the messaging and information dissemination of Greek-Australian needs to the Greek government.
Filoi tou Syriza has a national presence with active members already in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Membership of Filoi tou Syriza is an entitlement of all members of the Australia-Greece Solidarity Campaign.
The committee ‘Filoi tou Syriza’ is expressly and deliberately organised within the activist framework of the Australia-Greece Solidarity Campaign. This reflects the spirit and origins of Syriza itself as an activist organisation that grew out of the social movements for change in Greece. Syriza was never “just another party” – it represents a break from the corrupted politics of the 40 years since 1974 that have left Greece in its current catastrophic state. Filoi tou Syriza will not be a shopfront for anyone seeking connections and namecards or jobs within the Greek public service. Those days should belong in the past along with the names of Pasok and Nea Dimokratia. Filoi tou Syriza will not be its own island for isolated political discussion.
Filoi tou Syriza is for those in the Greek-Australian community who want to be active in partnership with all Australians from the trade unions and the social movements to support the political struggle in Greece as part of building a better world that is free of neoliberalism.
Filoi tou Syriza has arrived and it is here now. It is for those in our Greek communities across Australia that want to put their shoulder to the wheel and join the fight for a Greece with a future that includes dignity and justice. The coming days and months will be hard and critical for the survival of the Syriza project.
All those in the Greek community that want the best for Syriza and the Syriza led government, are encouraged to become active in Filoi tou Syriza by joining the Australia-Greece Solidarity Campaign. Members will be notified of meetings and upcoming events of Filoi tou Syriza.
